Google Inc. who is known for their specialization in internet search and online advertising has announced big plans for wireless technology. Google is currently contacting various cell phone operators and headset makers who are interested in their marketing strategy which will be competing with today’s iPhone.
Google plans to come out with a new cell phone, known as the “gPhone,” which will be cheaper and has better features than the iPhone. So how do they do it? According to Computer World, Google provides customers with free subscriptions by adding in advertisements with the search engines, email, and web browsing. By implementing advertisements, this will cut the cost of not only the phone itself, but also the cost per month on your cell phone plan. There are many cell phone operators who are interested in selling the gPhone. According to Wired, Sprint and T-mobile are on the list for possible service providers.
The gPhone is anticipated to be a button-less touch screen device according to Engadget. It will also have a GPS built-in the phone for pinpoint navigation with the Google Maps application. Some of the other applications that are included are GMail, GTalk, text messaging, and instant messaging. To make it sound even better, none of these applications are using up your phone storage. All of the applications are “served up over the network with new applications ‘attached’ to your account via a web interface” according to Engadget. So when should we expect this phone to reach your nearest retail store? We are told that the earliest we should expect to see it isn’t until the middle of next year.
